Transcript

We know that since the worldwide Covid pandemic, we’re in a mental health crisis.  And we know that many in crisis are self-medicating their emotional pain.  Unfortunately, for many, this has turned into addiction, resulting in escalating misery.

But they are not the only ones who are in pain.

Addiction impacts everyone

This is why naming addiction as a problem assists those you’re helping to identify it.

Children

They may see their parents acting erratically and blame themselves, contributing to trauma.

Parents

They may be keeping a close watch over their children so that they can administer Narcan to try to keep their child alive, a significant stressor.

Intimate partners

They may be hiding bottles, their stash, as they struggle with feeling confused, rejected, frustrated, and doubting themselves.

Neighbors

They may be watching this tragedy unfold and not know what to do, feeling helpless.

Colleagues

They may worry, try to cover for, and begin to resent the actions of someone they respected who is now in a downward spiral.

But there is an answer that enhances resilience

You can do what I do as a mental health provider.  I refer to Alateen and Al-Anon if alcoholism or addiction are part of the stressors I identify with my client.

Yes, if alcoholism or addiction is negatively impacting your client' lives, making a referral to Al-Anon or Alateen, even if this is not the primary reason why someone has sought out your services, can help speed their gaining more control in their lives.

4 Ways Al-Anon will support your client

Understanding they are not alone.

Empowering them to know what the problem is.

Helping them set appropriate limits.

Making conscious what their inner resources are, their resiliency.

Learn the how and why to make a referral in this live 45-minute webinar developed by Al-Anon for the professional community. Here, I’ll share how I assess and refer, and two members of Al-Anon will share their experiences. A brief Q and A will follow.
